Todorov: Narrative Theory
A films narrative is the story of a film and is broken down into 5 key stages by theorist Tzvetan Todorov
1. Equilibrium : everything in the film word is normal (not necessarily good, but it is normal)
2. Disruption : something happens (usually caused by the films main antagonist) to disrupt normal life
3. Recognition of disruption : the protagonist/s realise that something is wrong in their world or discover disruption
4. Attempt to solve disruption : the main protagonist goes on a journey to solve disruption
5. New equilibrium : the disruption is solved and a new normality occurs (things can never be the same as they were before the disruption, but a new 'normal life' is created).
5 key stages in the lego movie :
1. Equilibrium : The protagonist Emmet is living his normal life and it becomes clear to the audience that his life is mundane and controlled with how he is told what to do and to always follow instruction enforced by the antagonist president business.
2. Disruption : The audience sees the backstory of the master builders, a group of people that don't conform to the antagonists beliefs of uniform as they build whatever comes to their mind where as the antagonist believes everything should be the same and controlled. we are introduced to a main character Vitruvius who has a c
onfrontation with president business where he states a prophecy of a 'special' ending his plans to glue everything in place with the ultimate weapon the 'kragle'.

3. Recognition of disruption : The protagonist finds a whole and falls in it and at the bottom he finds a strange object, he touches it and images flash into his mind causing him to pass out. He wakes up with the object stuck to his back and then meets a main villain 'good cop bad cop' and then interrogated on what he knows about the object and the master builders. He is then rescued by a main character 'wild style' who tells him about whats going on. Emmet believes there has been a mistake as he is not special and can only follow instructions.
4. Attempt to solve disruption : emmet and the gang break into lord businesses office but fails
5. New equilibrium : Lord business helps emmet save the world
